Flashing school zone signs switched on

New flashing school zone lights are now installed on Sportmans Parade outside Kawana Waters State College and on Parklands Boulevard at Meridan State College as part of the Newman Government’s election commitment.

Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said the flashing lights will help warn motorists to slow down in school zones.

The signs were installed and switched on this week.

“Children are by nature unpredictable, and may not be concentrating when they approach the streets or roads next to the school,” Mr Bleijie said.

“We believe these signs are going to go a long way in reminding drivers they are approaching school zones and that they need to slow down immediately.

“Schools have welcomed these lights to help improve safety for parents and students on surrounding roads at peak times and I am pleased the government is able to deliver this initiative in Kawana.”

Similar lights have already been rolled out in other Kawana electorate school zones.

The Newman Government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing light signs at over 300 school zones.

During 1 January to 30 September 2013, there were 22,365 speeding infringements issued in school zones.  This is 24 per cent greater than the same period for 2012.  Of the 22,365 speeding infringements, 251 were issued to drivers travelling between 31 and 40 km/h above the speed limit and 21 were issued to drivers travelling more than 40 km/h above the speed limit.
