Ratepayers want kerbside collection

With travel restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 crisis, many in the community have been confined to home and unable to travel to the rubbish tip to dispose of unwanted recyclables.

Member for Kawana, Jarrod Bleijie, is leading the call requesting the Sunshine Coast Council provide a kerbside collection service for ratepayers whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

Mr Bleijie said a large number of residents have taken the opportunity during isolation to clean up around the house and garden during the COVID-19 crisis.

“We have all been told to stay at home, particularly the elderly and those considered vulnerable, unless travelling for an essential purpose – many have taken the opportunity to clean up the house or yard and have items they cannot dispose of at the moment,” he said.

A poll conducted on Mr Bleijie’s Facebook page has received over 1000 responses, with 98% voting in favour of a kerbside collection service during the crisis.

“The result is emphatic. 98% of respondents would like to see the Sunshine Coast Council provide a kerbside collection service to support ratepayers. I think it’s incumbent on Mayor Jamieson and the Councillors to step up and listen to the residents that elected them,” Mr Bleijie said.

Mr Bleijie has written to Mayor Mark Jamieson requesting that the Sunshine Coast Council support the community by offering a kerbside collection service. He is yet to receive a reply.
